How to assess a recommendation about anger

Distinguish an explanation of anger, an individual assessment and a claim that an intervention is effective. Sharing a subject does not mean they require the same evidence.

Identify the type of claim

A text may define an emotion, discuss possible triggers or say that a particular method is effective. Separate these three kinds first. Pay particular attention when someone else’s experience is used to reach a conclusion for everyone.

“Effective” for which outcome?

When a method is described, ask which outcome was examined, over what period and against which comparison. Someone reporting that they feel better is not the same kind of data as a measurement of a particular behaviour. Do not give a recommendation a scientific label before finding the relevant research.

Your reading note

  • Write the recommendation in one sentence.
  • Find the primary source on which it is based.
  • Record the scope, participants and measurements.
  • Identify situations about which the recommendation provides no information.

This list is not a clinical assessment or treatment plan. A personal health situation cannot be evaluated using only a web text or an online calculator. General APA information and a professional consultation have different purposes.
